A concrete love affair
Yesterday the talented Melvin Ong stepped in to our Creative Space … I remember meeting him a couple of years ago when Marjon and I were creating a Singapore city guide and we walked in at supermama’s shop. Melvin was sitting there working on his insanely beautiful looking leather baskets which he was planning to show at the Milan furniture fair … more known he is for the perfect paperweight made of concrete called ROK. And the newer version the paperweight Spintops from brass and bronze.
I am utterly thrilled and delighted that Melvin is the first young Singapore designer that offers his work in Bloesem’s Creative Space … yes we as of today sell the Rok and Spintops and I sincerely hope more designers will follow soon, because there is so much talent here in my new hometown.
Melvin is the founder of Desinere (the latin root of the word silence is desinere, meaning “stop”) and in his own words … “Desinere approaches design through quiet reflection of relationships between items, people & experiences; to create authentic, honest objects that are refreshingly unexpected.”
I will be visiting Melvin at his new studio in Tiong Bahru and talk to him about his future plans…. or the other designs I would love to carry in our collection
