Chatting with Maud of Belouk
And looking at her designs and fabrics, you might think that Maud Felius, owner of Belouk, would be all for design trends. But in an interview with Bloesem for our latest Bloesem Gazette, she said otherwise, mentioning that she’d rather follow her own artistic direction, which would explain why her pieces are a more timeless style. Read on to see what else she had to say about trends, Belouk’s future, which celebrity she’d design a chair for, and of course, her favourite places for some delectable food.
How did you start Belouk?
I started with the reupholstering of old furniture and I then explored the options to design my own chairs which can be customised in the color and fabric you like. From one came another; we added lamps, side tables, stools and accessories and voila: Belouk was born!
Nice! Where does your passion for interiors come from?
From my and my husband’s family. They live in the Netherlands and France, and although their interiors look completely different, it’s their passion and enthusiasm that they shared and showed me. It is so nice to be surrounded with items you hand-picked to create your own style. To explore, to try and simply to dare!
It’s amazing what you can come up with when you explore your creativity to come up with your own unique style, isn’t it? So, what are exciting plans are in Belouk’s future?
I’m always on the lookout for new items and having different furniture custom made. Soon we expect our first (self designed) coffee tables. I’m so excited about it!
Having been living in Singapore for a while, any favourite restaurants and hidden gems you’d like to share with us?
We have indeed been here for the past 10 years and love the variety of restaurants here; an absolute must-go is Andre Restaurant; by far the most sophisticated restaurant we have ever been. We absolutely love the hamburgers at the Potato Head, the sushi at Kinki and another great restaurant is Kilo. We heard great things about Burnt Ends at Teck Lim Road, we will go there soon!
Thoughts about new trends?
To be honest, I’m not that much into trends; I believe you should follow your “own trend”, and your own instinct. Whatever you like is more important, not what other people decide you should like. Having said that, it is great there are so many fairs to go to, magazines to read, shops to visit, but if only to find out if the trends they show you will impress or surprise you! If they do, go for it!
If you could send a chair to a movie star, who would you pick and why?
That is a interesting question; I would definitely send one of our chairs to Helen Mirren. She is such a beautiful, graceful lady and a great actress. She will look great in any chair you put her in actually, haha!
Now you know this issue of our gazette is all about that letter ‘B’. Which word do you like best that starts with a B..?
That is without a doubt (the Dutch word) Bolus and although I realise the meaning in English doesn’t sound very appealing, it is one of those things that you simply have to treat yourself with once in a while; it is a tasty, sticky bun loaded with sugar and cinnamon. It’s a traditional treat in Zeeland, the south-west province of the Netherlands, where my grandparents used to have a bakery. It is simply delicious!
We couldn’t agree more, Maud! And we just love the concept of Belouk and her passion, which is why we were so excited to work with her. From capturing some exquisite photography of her beautiful furniture, to designing her logo and website, Maud Felius was an absolute delight to work with – full of passion and ideas.
